Senator proposes mandatory 30-year sentence for persons who rape or murder children

Matthew Samuda

A drastic proposal has been made for penalising person who rape or murder children.

Government Senator Matthew Samuda says they should be given minimum mandatory 30-year sentences.

Speaking Friday in the state of the nation debate in the Senate, Mr. Samuda said the issue of crimes against children has been weighing on him.

Apart from his proposed increase in the mandatory sentence for child predators, he said there is another step the government can take to increase children's safety.

"We must ensure our telecom providers participate more vigorously with the Ananda Alert system," he suggested, explaining that service providers could enable information about missing children to be displayed on cellphones.

Mr. Samuda added that the budget to agencies aimed at protecting children must be increased.

Police statistics up to November 4 show an increase in the number of children murdered in Jamaica this year.

Forty children were killed, up from 38 in 2018.
