Simpson Miller nominated for PNP President

Portia Simpson Miller was nominated shortly after midday on Monday for the post of President of the People's National Party (PNP).

Mrs. Simpson Miller is expected to be the sole nominee as former General Secretary, Peter Bunting and senior PNP member Dr. Peter Phillips have declared that neither intends to challenge for the party's top job.

Addressing the media after her nomination, Mrs. Simpson Miller said she did not feel compelled to resign after the polls, despite similar practices in Britain.

"Well, this is Jamaica; this is not Britain and the politics of Jamaica and the political parties are totally different from that of the British kind of politics," she declared.

The exercise at the Party's Old Hope Road headquarters follows on the heels of a stinging address at the 43rd annual conference of the PNP's Women's Movement on Sunday at the University of the West Indies, where Mrs Simpson Miller was the guest speaker.

She blasted those calling for renewal stating that stalwarts of the movement know that electoral defeats are part of the reality of the political process.

Mrs. Simpson Miller said with all the problems dogging the PNP, members should seek to put the interest of the Party and country ahead of personal ambition.
