Attorneys representing Opposition Leader Portia Simpson Miller in the long running Trafigura saga are to mount a challenge to a subpoena issued Tuesday morning.
High Court Judge Justice Lennox Campbell had, on Tuesday, granted a
request from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Paula Llewellyn for Mrs. Simpson-Miller and three members of the Peoples National Party (PNP) to appear in court. Subpoenas are also to be issued for Businessman Norton Hinds.
Miss Llewellyn's office is the designated authority in mutual legal assistance matters. However, Senior Attorney K.D. Knight says the Opposition leader's legal team has served notice that a challenge to the subponea will be mounted.
Mr. Knight was absent from Tuesday's proceedings in the Appellate Court, but said he was in possession of an order from the Court of Appeal, "staying the proceedings before Mr. Justice Campbell until an appeal is heard, which was sought in 2011."
The subpoenas are expected to be issued by Thursday and all five will be required to be in court on Monday.
Dutch Authorities want to question PNP officials about a $31 million donation by Dutch company Trafigura Beheer to the party in 2006.
Dutch companies are exempted from donating funds to political parties. Trafigura had engaged in an oil-lifting contract with the then PNP administration.
