Small businesses urge gov't to scrap Minimum Business Tax

Hugh Johnson

There is another call for the government to abolish the Minimum Business Tax which members of the Small Business Association of Jamaica describe as a burden on their operations.

Hugh Johnson, President of the Association, says many persons do not want to register their businesses because they cannot afford to pay the taxes.

The tax of $60,000 per annum is levied on all registered companies which have revenues greater than $5 million.

Mr. Johnson says this is a disincentive to small businesses who are already struggling to stay afloat.

Under the Provisional Collections of Tax Act, start-up businesses are not required to pay the Minimum Business Tax until after two years of operations.
