Efforts are underway to upgrade Spanish Town Hospital in St. Catherine to a Type A facility.

The operations arm of the United Nations, which is spearheading the venture through the Ministry of Health, has been conducting an assessment to determine the amount of work that will be required.

Dwyane Francis, Chief Executive Officer of the hospital, said the facility is in dire need of an upgrade and donations and support received from corporate Jamaica as well as the municipal corporations are "greatly appreciated."

He said the donation of two stretchers to the institution on Thursday will greatly assist the Accident and Emergency Department.

The stretchers were donated by the Mayors of Spanish Town and Portmore.

Speaking at the handover ceremony on Thursday, Portmore Mayor Leon Thomas, said his municipal corporation will continue to assist the hospital.

Mayor of Spanish Town Norman Scott echoed his sentiments, adding that the facility was well in need of critical equipment.

The decision to donate equipment to the Spanish Town Hospital followed the death of Councillor Michael Edwards last year after he received treatment at the hospital.
