Sri Lankan man taken to court for living in Jamaica illegally

A Sri Lankan man, who has been living in Jamaica illegally since 2012, was taken to court on Wednesday.

Godfrey Ranjan Fernando appeared before the Corporate Area Criminal Court on a charge of  overstaying. He's to return on Friday when the Magistrate is expected to issue a deportation order.

Fernando was arrested on Tuesday by immigration officials at his Abbey Court apartment in St Andrew.
Investigators reported that, in October 2012, the 58 year old Sri Lankan arrived in Jamaica on a visitor's visa. He was granted a 90 day extension.

Fernando applied for another extension and was allowed to stay until November 2013. He applied for a third extension but this was denied by the immigration department.
