The St Andrew South police are reporting that a total of fifteen active gangs are operating in the division.
The leader of one of the gangs is based in the United States.
Superintendent Gary Francis, who heads the St Andrew South division, says the rival gangs are responsible for several major crimes, including shootings, in the division.
Francis, who was speaking at a media briefing yesterday, said the police have started to dismantle several of the gangs
Eighty five illegal guns have been seized in that police division since the start of the year.
Francis also revealed that the police are working with international law enforcement agencies to apprehend the leader of the York Avenue gang who is based in the United States.
The York Avenue gang is among several warring factions operating out of Waterhouse in St Andrew.
