The St. Ann Chamber of Commerce is calling for the authorities to put the necessary measures in place to make a section of the North South Highway safer for motorists.
In the last two months, there have been four major crashes in the vicinity of Mammee Bay, near St. Ann's Bay.
The latest incident happened on Wednesday afternoon when the driver of a tractor trailer reportedly failed to negotiate a corner in the
the area and the vehicle crashed into an embankment.
Pixley Irons, President of the St. Ann Chamber of Commerce, is deeply concerned about the situation. Specifically, he is concerned about the round-a-bout, which he says does not have proper lighting or markings. He believes more signs should also be erected.
"They need to put signs on the road to remind motorists that they need to change to a lower gear when descending the hill and that will lessen the problem, because if you don't go to a lower gear, when you reach the foot of the hill, you won't have any breaks in that car - and that's one of the major problems," asserted the Chamber president.
He said the Chamber will be having meetings this month with the authorities to address the situation.
In the meantime, the driver of the tractor trailer remains in hospital in critical but stable condition. He has burns to his body and a broken right arm.
