St. Thomas farmers to get government assistance

The Government is to provide assistance to farmers in St. Thomas who suffered crop losses due to this week's heavy rains.

Agriculture Minister Karl Samuda, who toured affected areas Thursday morning, said flood waters caused extensive losses to farmers.

Speaking with RJR News, the minister said he has asked the parish Council to prepare the estimates and speak with those affected to determine what is the full extent of the loss.

"When we get those figures," he said, "we will sit down and assess the extent to which we can bring relief to them. But what is clear, is that we have to do something immediately because the area has been very badly damaged."

Meanwhile, the Isaac Barrant Medical Centre in Eastern St. Thomas remains closed due to flooding following the rains.

When RJR News visited the facility today, workers were seen carrying out clean up operations.
