St. Thomas Parish Council struggles to finance repairs after heavy rains

The St. Thomas Parish Council continues to struggle financially to complete its clean up exercise and repairs following the recent heavy rains which caused damage to infrastructure in the parish almost two weeks ago. Roads, gullies and drains were the most affected.

Some of the damage to infrastructure has been addressed by the Parish Council. However, according to Huel Jackson, Superintendent of Roads and Works, the preliminary estimate based on a flood damage report is in excess of $40 million. This includes clean up activities, infrastructure repair and construction work.

He said the estimates may be affected by the Council's inability to access to some areas.

"The hillside community is known for its landslippages, its instability in terms of terrain and its geological makeup (and) the movement in soil because of flood damage has been very extensive," he said.

Mr. Jackson said the Council is hoping that the Ministry of Local Government will provide funding to assist with repairs.

"It's just a wait and see how the funding comes in, we're at a restricted amount right now but we're in dialogue with the Ministry and we're hoping to get some response from them in the shortest possible time," he said. C
