St. Thomas residents block Llandewey bridge

Impatient with the time it is taking to repair the Llandewey bridge in St. Thomas, residents on Monday morning blocked the entrances with boulders.

The residents are concerned about the safety of the structure as a hole has developed at a section of the single lane bridge.

The blockade has brought vehicular traffic to a standstill.

The residents have also blocked the alternative route.

Garfield, a resident of Llandewey, said the decision to block the bridge follows two recent incidents in which drivers have either suffered injury or vehicular damage whilst driving on the bridge.

In a release last week, the National Works Agency (NWA) said the bridge which links the communities of Llandewey, Ramble and Cedar Valley is now only accessible by small vehicles.

It said it would temporarily repair the bridge's damaged concrete deck noting that the work is being treated as an emergency.

When contacted Monday morning, Stephen Shaw, Communication Manager at the National Works Agency, said efforts are being made to identify a contractor to undertake the repair work.
