St. Thomas schools forced to close due to flood rains

The Ministry of Education says St. Thomas Technical High and Duckensfield Primary School were affected by the flood rains Tuesday.

Byron Buckley, Director of Corporate Communication at the Ministry of Education, explained that St. Thomas Technical High was unable to have regular classes, but was opened for students who were sitting CAPE and CSEC exams.

"We also have a report that the Duckensfield Primary School was closed because the road was blocked (by) fallen trees and so on, which has to be cleared up," he said.

Roads reopened

Meanwhile, all roads in St. Thomas that were blocked due to heavy rain Tuesday night have been opened to at least single lane traffic.

The National Works Agency (NWA) says some roads have been impacted by breakaways, flooding, fallen trees, landslides and downed utility poles.

Stephen Shaw, Communication Manager at the NWA, gave an update on the work being done to clear the roads.

"We have deployed heavy equipment to the areas and we are working to have those areas where we have material that we can clean up removed. Where it is the areas are inundated, we just have to await the waters to recede. Thereafter, we can go about doing whatever remedial work is necessary," he said.

In the meantime, Mr. Shaw says some areas in Portland have also been affected by the rain.

"In particular the road from Folly to Fair Prospect. We had some problems at San San where trees had fallen on the road reducing it to single lane access. But that aside, we have not had any adverse reports in relation to the roads over there," Mr. Shaw explained.
