Ten-digit dialling becomes mandatory on March 31

Effective March 31 ten-digit dialling will be mandatory for all local calls.

The Office of Utilities Regulation (OUR) said the major issues with implementing the system have been dealt with.

Last October, the OUR delayed the implementation of ten-digit dialling by five months, after receiving requests for an extension from service providers and some of their large business customers.

A new area code, 658 was implemented in Jamaica on May 30 last year, to augment the supply of numbers provided under area code 876.

The OUR said this made it necessary to introduce mandatory 10-digit dialling for all local calls.
