Three Hondurans fined on drug charges, ordered deported

Three Hondurans who were held in Jamaican waters with over 650 pounds of ganja were on Thursday fined and ordered deported when they appeared in the St. Elizabeth Parish Court.

Thirty-six year old Andrez Hopkins, 31 year old Humberto Curilo and 27 year old Cristyfor Elliot pleaded guilty to illegal entry and were each fined $5,000 or 10 days imprisonment.

On Tuesday, the men appeared in the Westmoreland Parish Court where Mr. Hopkins pleaded guilty to breaches of the Dangerous Drugs Act.

He was fined $2 million or six months imprisonment and given a 12 month mandatory sentence.

The Hondurans were held on November 20 by members of the Jamaica Defense Force Coast Guard off the coast of Negril, Westmoreland.

The ganja was found during a search of their boat.

Charles Benbow, the attorney representing the men, in explaining the reason for their appearance in a St. Elizabeth Court, said while they were charged in Westmoreland, the Hondurans were interviewed by immigration personnel in St. Elizabeth.

Mr. Benbow also made an application in St. Elizabeth for the release of their vessel, but that was denied.
