Trade union wants to know whether National Minimum Wage will be raised this year

An attempt will be made on Tuesday to get answers from the Ministry of Labour on whether the National Minimum Wage will be increased this year.

Vincent Morrison, President of the Union of Clerical, Administrative and Supervisory Employees (UCASE) told RJR News that it will raise the matter during a meeting with Labour Minister Shahine Robinson.

Following island-wide consultations, the National Minimum Wage Advisory Commission submitted a report to the Labour Ministry early last month.

The minimum wage was last increased on March 1, 2016, when it moved from $5,600 to $6,200 for a 40 hour work week.

The minimum wage for industrial security guards was increased from $204.97 cents to $221.35 per hour for a 40-hour work week.

But this will be only one of several important issues to be raised with the Labour Minister, according to Morrison.

“For example, the re-establishment of the Joint Industrial Council for security guards… the issue of the Occupational Safety and Health Regulations, among other issues,” he enumerated.
