Trade unions slam Dalley's 5% cap on wage negotiations

Minister with responsibility for the Public Service Horace Dalley is under fire from the umbrella group of  trade unions following his declaration yesterday that the Government is not in a position to improve the five percent wage offer to public sector workers.

Vice President of  the Jamaica Confederation of  Trade Unions' Public Sector Committee, Keith Comrie, says Mr. Dalley was irresponsible and premature with his pronouncement. He says the statement came at a bad time with the parties in the middle of  negotiations. According to Mr. Comrie, this has implications for the next round of  wage talks scheduled for next week.

And the Jamaica Teachers' Association which wants a wage agreement signed this month is not accepting Mr. Dalley's pronouncement.

Mr. Dalley yesterday told RJR News he understood the unions' position that the offer is difficult to accept following five years of  wage restraint. However, he said it is not possible at this time to offer more.
