Transport Ministry looking to offset fuel cost for truckers

Leonard Green, Director of the All Island Truckers Association

Transport Minister Robert Montague is to meet with the Ministry of Finance to explore options to offset the rising cost of fuel on truckers.

This follows a meeting with members of the Port Trailer Haulage Association and the All Island Truckers Association at the Transport Ministry last Thursday.

A statement from the Ministry said the groups indicated that while they are unable to absorb increased fuel prices, they are not in favour of hiking transportation costs.

Leonard Green, Director of the All Island Truckers Association, said the group is seeking a concession on diesel fuel.

Discussions have also surrounded tariffs and import duties on low emission equipment and the phasing out high sulfur diesel, however, Mr. Green said if the price of diesel fuel is reduced, truckers might be able to "hold our rates while we have the discussions on the other matters."

Mr. Green said if the government fails to come up with a solution within a month, the truckers could have to increase their rates, despite the implications it might have for inflation.
