Trewlany woman charged in connection with fake overseas work programme

Charges have been laid against a Trelawny woman who is accused of scamming persons in a fake overseas work programme.

Thirty-four year-old Mitzie Lamont of  Jackson Town was arrested and charged on Friday with conspiracy to defraud, and four counts of obtaining money by false pretence. It's alleged that between November 2013 and January this year, Miss Lamont told unsuspecting persons that she operated a Canadian overseas work programme.

Individuals were asked to send $80,000 through a remittance agency. However, when they were unable to leave the island on the scheduled departure date, a report was made to the police and an investigation launched by the Area One Fraud Squad.

Miss Lamont was subsequently arrested and is to appear in the Falmouth Resident Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.
