Trinidad PM calls for meeting on public health threats

Trinidad and Tobago has called for a meeting of  CARICOM leaders, to discuss a coordinated response to the public health threats, posed by the Ebola and Chikungunya viruses.

Prime Minister, Kamla Persad Bissessar, responding to an advisory issued by the World Health Organization, (WHO), said Port of  Spain would be willing to host the meeting.

She's urging regional leaders to take preemptive measures, to ensure the safety, health and well-being of  citizens of  the region.
Persad-Bissessar says, while the risk to the region is low, the leaders must protect citizens.

She's confident that CARICOM countries will respond favourably.

So far, the Caribbean has not recorded any cases of  the Ebola virus, but several regional countries have reported cases of  Chikungunya.
