Tropical Storm Harvey moves away from the Windward Islands

Tropical Storm Harvey is moving away from the Windward Islands, but heavy rain and gusty winds could continue this evening.

Forecasters say Harvey may pose a threat early next week in parts of Central America's Caribbean coast.

Slow strengthening is expected this weekend as Harvey tracks through the Caribbean Sea.

Harvey will bring an additional one to two inches of rain across portions of the Leeward and Windward Islands from Guadeloupe southward to Grenada, which could trigger life-threatening flash flooding and mud slides in mountainous terrain.

As of early Friday morning, nearly 4.5 inches of rain had been recorded in Barbados.

The tropical storm is expected to cause one to two inches of rain in Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao tomorrow.

After that, Harvey will then track westward through the rest of the Caribbean Sea, and likely pose a threat to parts of Central America and Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula early next week.

With regards to Jamaica, the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) and the Meteorological Service continue to monitor the development of Tropical Storm Harvey.

The ODPEM said Tropical Storm Harvey should pass well south of Jamaica on Sunday into Monday.

While it is not predicted that Jamaica will experience tropical storm conditions, the ODPEM said weather condition across the island could deteriorate.

It explained that this could result in the possibility of poor sea conditions on the South Coast, flooding in low lying areas, and landslides in hilly terrains.

The ODPEM is urging Jamaicans to take the necessary precautions and continue to monitor the media.
