Two deaths in St. Lucia believed to be influenza related

Health authorities in St. Lucia are investigating two deaths amid reports of an increase in influenza cases in the country.

Medical Officer of Health Dr. Sharon Belmar-George, has observed that the deaths are unusual for St. Lucia and at this time of the year.

She said St. Lucia's flu season is usually October to March and peaks in December.

Dr. Belmar-George explained that health officials normally start seeing increases in flu cases from October decreasing during the period January to March.

But, she said, there had been an increase in cases during December, and significantly more than normal were recorded in March.

News of the influenza cases in St. Lucia comes a little more than a week after it was confirmed that four persons had died in Jamaica as a result of  the H1N1 influenza virus.

The cases were recorded in St Ann, Kingston and St Catherine.

The Jamaican Ministry of Health also reported that there have been 110 suspected cases of  influenza in Jamaica since the start of  the year.
