'Unfortunate' - JLP chides PNP members for homophobic comments

Dr. Horace Chang and PNP candidate Dr. Winston De La Haye

Jamaica Labour Party General Secretary Dr. Horace Chang has described the homophobic comments made by People's National Party spokespersons during a political meeting last weekend, as unfortunate.

"I know we can get emotional on platforms but I thought we had gone beyond that kind of buttered politics at this point in time. Jamaica is a very tolerant society. We accept the rights and privileges of all... The issue is that the comment was inappropriate, wrong and I have to condemn it; and nobody who is seeking national office should be using that kind of language anywhere in private or public in Jamaica today," Dr. Chang insisted.

The PNP, in a release on Tuesday, expressed regret at the offensive utterances made on Sunday during the presentation of its candidate for St. Catherine East Central, Dr. Winston De La Haye.

In the statement, the opposition party reaffirmed its commitment to non-discrimination based on class, colour, creed or sexual orientation.

Mark Golding, one of the MPs who had come in for strong public criticism arising from his comments at the meeting, followed up on social media with a separate statement, in which he apologised specifically to Alando Terrelonge, the government MP who was the apparent target of the remarks.

Dr. Winston De La Haye, has said he has also reached out to Mr. Terrelonge.

Speaking Wednesday on the Morning Agenda on Power 106, Dr. De La Haye said he is awaiting a response from Mr. Terrelonge for a meeting.
