US official questions decision to decriminalise small quantities of marijuana

A senior official at the US State Department is insisting the US would not have gone the route of  decriminalising small quantities of  ganja and has issued a stern warning to Jamaica about pending legislative changes.

Citing Jamaica's reputation for ganja cultivation and export Assistant Secretary of  State for International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs William Brownfield told RJR News that the US will be keeping an eye on Jamaica in order to protect its citizens.

Four states in the US have so far legalised ganja and the federal government has not challenged them on the matter.

He declined to state whether the US is displeased with Jamaica's plan to go the route of  decriminalisation.

Brownfield cautioned that like the almost 200 other countries that have signed conventions related to ganja...Jamaica must abide.

He said Jamaica has two issues: name recognition for cultivating good weed and being a transit nation and vowed that the US will do everything it can to ensure that decriminalising small quantities of  ganja will not increase narcotics trafficking to the US.
