UTECH revises Enrolment Commitment Fee for returning students

In the wake of  growing opposition the University of  Technology (UTECH) has revised its Enrolment Commitment Fee for returning students. UTECH recently proposed that students pay a fee of J$50,000. .

Beneficiaries of  the Students Loan Bureau would pay a non-refundable 20,000 fee before being allowed to register for courses, however, this did not sit well with students who pointed to inability to pay.

Following discussions, UTECH said it reduced the Enrolment Commitment Fee from $50,000 to $20,000 .
UTECH says all new and returning students are required to pay the fee in order to begin module selection for enrolment for Semester 1.
According to UTECH the Enrolment Commitment Fee is not an additional cost, but is applied as a part of total tuition and other fees.

UTECH says the fee will facilitate a more efficient and equitable enrolment period whereby all students have a fair opportunity to select available modules, make fee payments and complete their enrolment.

Meanwhile, students on full scholarship or sponsorship will be exempt from paying the Enrolment Commitment Fee.

Those students are required to visit the Financial Aid Office where assistance will be provided to allow for module selection without payment of  the fee.  Acting UTECH President Burchell Whiteman says the University has been sensitive to the economic plight of  students.
He said UTECH has further reduced the minimum payment on total invoice.
This has been adjusted from 80% to a minimum of  65% to obtain financial clearance and automatic clearance to sit Semester 1 exams.
