Voting underway in Scotland's Independence Referendum

Voting is underway in Scotland as its people decide today whether to remain in the United Kingdom or become an independent nation.

Voters are being asked to simply answer "Yes" or "No" to the referendum question: "Should Scotland be an independent country?"

There are 4,285,323 people - 97% of the electorate - registered to vote. It is expected that the result will be announced on Friday morning.

Scotland has been part of the UK since 1707.
