Wage talks progressing between firefighters, gov't

Helene Davis Whyte, General Secretary of JALGO, which represents firefighters

Headway has reportedly been made in wage discussions between the Ministry of Local Government and the Jamaica Association of Local Government Officers (JALGO) which represents the island's firefighters.

The parties met on Tuesday.

The firefighters took industrial action last week to protest the non-payment of salary arrears and call-out emergency allowances as well as overlaps in the pay scale.

However, they agreed to resume work and allow further discussions.

Helene Davis Whyte, General Secretary of JALGO, said following talks, it was agreed that persons who were entitled to promotions would begin to receive their improved rank.

Both sides will return to the Labour Ministry on June 19 to report on the outcome of the talks.
