Ward at St. Joseph's Hospital being fixed to ease overcrowding at Bustamante Hospital

The Ministry of Health is renovating a ward at St. Joseph's Hospital in St. Andrew as it seeks to ease overcrowding from dengue and flu cases at the Bustamante Hospital for Children and the Kingston Public Hospital.

Dr. Jacqueline Bissassor-McKenzie, Chief Medical Officer in the ministry, told a media briefing Wednesday morning that hospitals have been facing serious challenges as a result of increased dengue and flu cases.

The ministry disclosed that there have been nine confirmed dengue cases, compared with zero in 2017.

In addition, there have been 570 suspected cases of dengue up from 177 last year.

Last week, Health Minister Dr. Christopher Tufton revealed that the children's hospital has been admitting about 40 patients a day since November.
