Windalco workers in Ewarton ordered to resume duties

Garth Cheese, UCASE Chief Union delegate at the Ewarton plant

Production workers at Windalco's bauxite plant in Ewarton, St. Catherine have been ordered to resume duties on Thursday following a meeting at the Industrial Disputes Tribunal (IDT).

The meeting was called Wednesday morning between the management of Windalco and the Union of Clerical, Administrative and Supervisory Employees (UCASE) which represents the workers.

It follows a two-day protest by hundreds of production workers over the non-payment of retroactive salaries.

Garth Cheese, UCASE Chief Union delegate at the Ewarton plant, told RJR News the workers were ordered to return to work at 8 am Thursday or pay $500,000 and $20,000 for each day they stay away from work following that.

He said the IDT noted that the Windalco is also liable of not following the previous IDT ruling, however, the workers must return to their jobs before pursuing the matter.

But Mr. Cheese said he is dissatisfied with the outcome of the meeting with the Industrial Disputes Tribunal as Windalco should have also been ordered to pay the owed monies to the workers.
