Windalco workers reject new contract offer

Vincent Morrison

Workers employed to Windalco have voted to reject the company's new employment contract offer.

Following a meeting Friday morning, Vincent Morrison, President of the Union of Clerical, Administrative and Supervisory Employees (UCASE), said the workers are unhappy with the provisions of the offer.

They are also adamant that they will not sign the contract until the matter of their working conditions and benefits, which is currently before the Industrial Disputes Tribunal, is dealt with.

Moreover, Mr Morrison asserted that it is an infringement of the Labour Relation and Industrial Dispute Act to call the now unionised workers to a meeting to discuss any new contractual arrangement without UCASE.

UCASE has said it will be seeking legal advice in the wake of threats issued by Windalco against workers. Mr. Morrison indicated that the company has told the workers that they will not be paid if they do not sign the contracts, neither will they be allowed to come on the plant.

He has warned that if the company carry out its threat, the workers will be forced to take industrial action.

News came earlier this month that Windalco was still having problems paying its employees despite a stay of US sanctions against its parent company, Russian aluminum producer UC Rusal.

Windalco has been struggling as international financial institutions shy away from doing business with it because of the threat of sanctions.
