Wisynco fire still burning, but contained

The fire at Wysinco's warehouse at Lakes Pen, St. Catherine was still burning late into Thursday night, but had been effectively contained, according to firefighters.

The fire is believed to have started sometime after 4.00 p.m., in the 250,000 square ft facility, operated by one of Jamaica's largest manufacturing companies.

More than 40 firefighters brought in to combat the blaze.

William Mahfood, Managing Director of Wysinco, has asserted that, despite this significant setback, the company will "rise again".

In the immediate aftermath of the fire, however, attention is now being turned to the impact it will have on the community. Norman Scott, Mayor of Spanish Town, has announced that he will meet shortly with various stakeholders to discuss these concerns.

Already, the National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) has been consulted to assess the environmental impact of the fire. It is believed that residents of Central Village and sections of Portmore could experience respiratory problems.
