Bunting’s plans to tackle crime
In a presentation with economic undertones, the National Security Minister went through several strategies, many familiar, to achieve what he said was an overall plan to have Jamaica up to first world standard as it relates to crime, by 2017.
Mr. Bunting presented a number of short and long term plans to address the country's spiralling crime rate.
He placed on the table an ambitious goal of Jamaica having one or less murders in that 5 year period.
In the short term the Security Minister said intense security operations are already being carried out island wide.
He added that his ministry will embark , in a few weeks, on an anti-gang media campaign to inform people of the dangers of encouraging gang activity in their communities.
Mr. Bunting said in the long term, his administration will target kingpins in the criminal underworld, hitting them where it hurts most, in their pockets.
Among the long term plans is the strengthening of legislation through the Proceeds of Crime Act.
He said a National Anti Corruption Task Force to target white collar criminals who are linked with the underworld will also be established.
