A Kingston businessman, who was charged in connection with the theft of a container loaded with millions of dollars worth of appliances, from the wharves, was offered $5 million bail Thursday.
Donald Combs, 47 was offered bail when he appeared before the Half-Way-Tree Criminal Court.
He was arrested during an investigation into the disappearance of containers with millions of dollars worth of goods from the wharves.
Investigators say a container which was removed, illegally, from the wharves, was found at his business place, on Molynes Road in St. Andrew.
The container was loaded with appliances valued at $50 million dollars.
Mr. Combs is to return to court on September 14.
He is among a number of persons charged in the customs racket.
Earlier this month, Customs Officials, assisted by the Flying Squad, raided several business establishments in a bid to recover several containers loaded with goods, which were removed illegally from the wharves.
Seventeen persons including customs brokers, truck drivers, and wharf workers, were arrested in the sweep, which took the cops to several locations across the country.
It is reported that on several occasions, containers loaded with washing machines, LCD and plasma televisions, refrigerators as well as stereo systems, were illegally removed from the island's ports, without the required customs duties and fees being paid.
The scam is said to have cost the country $150 million in revenue.
