J’can elected to the IACHR
Another Jamaican has been elected a member of the Inter American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR).
She is Tracy Robinson, Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Law at the University of the West Indies.
Miss Robinson was elected on Tuesday at the 41st Regular Session of the Organization of American States (OAS) General Assembly in San Salvador, El Salvador
She received the highest number of votes among the candidates and will serve a four year term commencing January 1, 2012.
Miss Robinson is the second Jamaican elected to serve on the Inter American Commission on Human Rights.
The first was her father, Patrick Robinson, who is currently the President of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, based in The Hague.
He served as a member of the IACHR from 1988 to 1995 and as its Chairman in 1991.
The IACHR is an autonomous body of the OAS, whose primary function is promoting the observance and defense of human rights.
The Commission has its headquarters in Washington DC and represents all member States of the OAS.
