Kamla turns to religious leaders for help to end environmentalist's hunger strike

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar of Trinidad & Tobago has asked members of the Inter Religious Organisation (IRO) to intervene and save the life of environmentalist Dr Wayne Kublalsingh.

The Trinidad Express newspaper has reported that IRO president Haripersad Maharaj and other IRO members will meet with Kublalsingh at noon on Friday outside the Office of the Prime Minister, St Clair, where they will attempt to urge him to not end his life in protest.

Kublalsingh has entered the 24th day of his second hunger strike outside the Prime Minister’s office.

Persad-Bissessar has shown no intention of acceding to Kublalsingh’s request to stop construction of a highway, but out of concern for his life, met with the IRO with the hope that some spiritual guidance would change his position.

Speaking following the meeting with the IRO members which included Rev Albon Dean Daniel, Haji Yacoob Ali, Archbishop Harris, Barbara Burke, Sat Maharaj and others, the Prime Minister said the meeting was not to discuss the highway project but to find ways to save Kublalsingh’s life.

Maharaj said the IRO shares the Prime Minister’s concerns over Kublalsingh’s life and would meet with him immediately.
