The St. Lucia Government has expressed surprise that a High Court judge in Britain has rejected the diplomatic immunity of the country's Permanent Representative to the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
Dr. Walid Juffa is facing a lawsuit, filed by his ex-wife, Christina Estrada, who is seeking financial relief from her Saudi billionaire ex-husband.
The Kenny Anthony Administration said in a statement that, while the UK court proceedings constitute a private family matter, as a sovereign State, it is St. Lucia’s responsibility and sole right to decide who its diplomatic representatives are, or should be.
In a decision handed down on Monday, Justice Hayden said he was satisfied that Dr. Juffali obtained a diplomatic appointment with the sole intention of defeating Mrs Estrada’s claims, and that he had not discharged any responsibilities in connection with the appointment.
