Afghanistan makes World Cup history, condemning Scotland to 0-11 !

Afghanistan, riding the steely batting performance of Shenwari who slugged a late innings 96, scratched and clawed their way to a historic 1-wicket win over Scotland with 3-balls to spare, in their Group A World Cup match played in Dunedin on Thursday.

The loss meant Scotland are 0-11 as they extended their futility in World Cup matches.

Scotland batted first and made a moderate 210 all out off their 50-overs, with contributions from Matt Machan 31, Kyle Coetzer 25, Richie Berrington 25 and skipper Preston Mommsen 23 against Shapoor Zadran 4-38 and Dawlat Zadran 3-29.

Afghanistan were up against it at 97-7 after being 85-2 and seemingly in control of their chase. But Richie Berrington's medium pace of 4-40 triggered a middle order collapse of 5-wickets for 12 runs, before Shenwari put on critical 60 for the 9th wicket with Hamid Hassan who was not out on 15 in the end from 39 balls.

Shapoor Zadran with 12 not out teamed with Hassan to score the 19 runs  needed off 19 balls after Shenwari was dismissed caught at mid wicket after lofting and pulling some lovely sixes. Shapoor hit the winning run, whipping a leg side delivery backward of square for a boundary.

Over at the MCG, Sri-Lanka's batting exploded as Tillakaratne Dilshan 161 not out and Kumar Sangakkara 105 not out off 76 deliveries, led them to 332-1 off 50-overs. Thirimanne made 52.

Bangladesh could only muster 240 all out off 47 overs, with Sakib Al-Hasan 46 and Sabbir 53 leading the way against Lasith Malinga 3-35, as Sri-Lanka won by a commanding 92 runs.
