Blake completes sprint double as senior trials end

Commentary on the men's 400m & women's sprint hurdles

Yohan Blake completed the men’s sprint double by winning the 200 metres with his first sub 20 second clocking since 2012 as the JAAA Puma National Senior Athletics Championships ended with a barrage of quality performances at the National Stadium on Sunday evening. Blake stopped the clock at 19.97 seconds to finish well ahead of Rasheed Dwyer 20.26 and Warren weir 20.39.

The women's event was won in a moderate 22.71 by 21 year old Sashalee Forbes of GC Foster College. The highly-anticipated men's 400 metres was won by Nathon Allen in a nippy 44.58 seconds. The Auburn University athlete held off GC Foster's Demish Gaye 44.64 and Steven Gayle 45.09.

The women's event also proved to be a cracker as World and Olympic bronze medallist Shericka Jackson prevailed in 50.05 seconds with Chris-Ann Gordon second in 50.13 and 35 year old Novlene Williams-Mills third in a world masters record of 50.14.

Reigning world champion Danielle Williams made up for last year’s fall by closing the show with a splendid personal best effort in the 100 metre hurdles.

Williams recorded 12.56, bettering her previous best of 12.57 while Megan Simmonds 12.63 and Yanique Thompson 12.69, both ran personal best times to complete the top three.

Fourth place finisher Rushelle Burton who produced 12.70 seconds also makes the team to London as Williams being the reigning world champion, qualifies automatically.

In the field, World Championship bronze medallist O'Dayne Richards threw a season's best 21.22 metres to successfully defend the shot putt while Kimberly Williams leapt a wind-assisted 14.60 metres to retain the women's triple jump ahead of Shanieka Thomas-Ricketts 14.39 metres.
