Chambers misses out on medal at World U-20 Champs

National champion Raheem Chambers finished 6th in the men's 100; however a world-leading 13.20 seconds from sprint hurdler Dejour Russell highlighted Jamaica's participation on day 2 of the IAAF World Under-20 Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland on Wednesday.

Chambers ended 6th with 10.30 seconds with the win going to pre-race favorite, American Noah Lyles in a brisk 10.17 seconds.

Chambers was the only Jamaican representative in the final of the blue ribbon event after the nation's other competitor Jevaughn Matherson was eliminated in the semi finals.

Dejour russell produced a lifetime best in the men's 110 metre hurdles, after watching compatriot Damion Thomas take a tumble in the previous heat.

The 13.20 seconds is the fastest time in the world by a junior this year and the second fastest ever by a Jamaican under 20.

Tiffany James also produced a lifetime best in the women's 400, easing to 51.77 seconds to take semi-final 3.

Junelle Bromfield also made it through to Thursday’s final after finishing second in semi-final 2 in 52.18 seconds.

The final will run off at 1:15pm Thursday, Jamaica time. World Youth champion Christopher Taylor left it late but was always in control as he cruised to 46.73 seconds in winning heat 2 of the 400 metres. The other Jamaican Sean Bailey also made progress after finishing second in his heat in 46.83 seconds. 

 

Shannon Kalawan and Nicolee Foster also made progress to the semi-finals of the women's 400 metre-hurdles on Wednesday. Kalawan was second in her heat in 58.23 seconds while Foster ended third in 59.19 in her opening round. The final is scheduled for Thursday morning at 11:55 Jamaica time.

Jordan Scott registered 15.99 metres to progress to Thursday's final of the men's triple jump. Scott's effort was just shy of his personal best and saw him finish 6th overall.

However, Javier Lowe missed out after registering a best effort of 15.38 metres. The final begins at 1:10 pm Thursday afternoon.

And Janell Fullerton ended three places outside of a qualifying place in the women's shot put after recording 14.33 metres for 15th.

Reigning World Junior champion Jaheel Hyde is among six other Jamaicans who will be in action on Thursday's third day of competition.

The Olympic-bound Hyde who is the number one junior in the world will begin the defence of his 400 metres hurdles title when he goes off in heat 4 at 3:56 am Jamaica time. Timor Barrett, the nation's other competitor in the event, will go off in heat 1 at 3:35 am.

National junior champion Nigel Ellis will also touch the track for the first time as he contests the heats of the men's 200 at 4:30 am along with compatriot Hujaye Cornwall.

Jessica Noble will be the first Jamaican in action when she contests the qualifying round of the women's long jump at 2:40 am.

Meanwhile, Devia Brown will go in search of the nation's first medal in the final of the women's discus at 11:50 am.
