Change being contemplated for Olivier Shield format

Voice of DaCosta Cup Committee chairman Linvern Wright

With the prominence of the Flow Super Cup which sees rural and urban teams doing battle,  Chairman of the ISSA DaCosta Cup competition, Linvern Wright, says changes may need to occur in the Olivier Shield for the contest to keep its relevance.

Manning Cup champions Jamaica College won the Olivier Shield on Saturday, beating DaCosta Cup champions Rusea’s 3-2. However, the title seemingly has had less significance since the arrival of the Flow Super Cup four years ago.

But Wright speaking on Hitz 92 FM’s Sports Grill, said ISSA may follow the English model and play it during pre-season to revamp the shield.

”If a Community Shield model makes great sense going forward and is in the best interest of the boys, I believe we will make that kind of decision because there is the intention now to sit down and have that discussions and seriously make some decisions,” said Wright.

Wright also believes there needs to be dialogue with the body of principals in regards to the heavy schedule of games in the rural area competition.

“It’s something that’s taking a toll on them. Teachers complain about many of them sleeping in classes and that is something as principals we will have to sit down and look at and make decisions going forward for next year,” said Wright.
