Chris Gayle to lead Jamaica in Super50 tournament

It appears that the upcoming Regional Super50 Tournament will be the first taste of competitive cricket for Chris Gayle since he suffered a hamstring injury on the West Indies tour of India in October.

RJR Sports understands that the big hitting left hander has been named captain of the Jamaica team for the January 30 to February 16 tournament.

Gayle will replace Tamar Lambert who had led the team to the semi-finals last year when he was unavailable. Lambert will however retain leadership of the Four Day team.

Last season the Jamaicans had a five year four-day championship run broken when they lost to Trinidad & Tobago at the semi-final stage. That defeat also broke a record 15 match unbeaten run.

Meanwhile, it's understands that wicket-keeper batsman Chadwick Walton has requested permission to play for Combined Campuses and Colleges, instead of Jamaica during the upcoming season.

Walton had been named to the 44 member Jamaica training squad, but it's understood that the right hander wrote to the Jamaica Cricket Association (JCA) from New Zealand, where he's currently representing the West Indies.

Walton has reportedly told the JCA it would be easier to operate from Barbados where he is completing a masters degree.
