CONCACAF could get more World Cup places - report

Voice of former FIFA Development Officer Howard McIntosh

There is a suggestion that the CONCACAF region, made up of the Caribbean, Central and North American countries, would get three additional spots for the expanded 48-team World Cup starting in 2026. CONCACAF teams currently battle for three and a half spots to footblall's showpiece event.

Former FIFA Development Officer for the CONCACAF region, Jamaican Howard McIntosh weighed in on the matter.

“I think it’s excellent that the whole expansion continues to be discussed. Obviously, all the confederations are going to be advocating for more spaces and the same is true for CONCACAF,” said McIntosh.

The presidents of African nation's have told FIFA they want to double the number of places they receive from five to 10. Europe is seeking a minimum of 16 places, up from 13.

It's reported that Asia are expected to get eight to nine places, compared to 4 and a half now, and South America, which has 10 member countries, a total of six, also up from 4 and a half. Oceania, the small pacific islands confederation, would have one automatic place at the finals instead of a half.

The final allocation of places must be passed by the FIFA council.
