'Concrete' Moncriffe bows into action in 2018 Contender Series

Voices of Jamaican welterweight Devon Moncriffe and Canadian welterweight Tyler Wilson

It will be experience versus inexperience when former champion Devon ‘Concrete’ Moncriffe of Jamaica takes on Canada's Tyler Wilson in the fourth fight of this year's Wray and Nephew Welterweight Contender Ceries. The contest is set for the Chinese Benovolent Association headquarters on Wednesday night. At Tuesday's weigh-in, Moncriffe tipped the scales at 145 pounds, a pound-and-a-half lighter than his opponent.

The 41 year old Moncriffe who won the competition in 2013, feels no stress having had to come down from the middleweight to welterweight division. “Sometimes I look at the guys at 160 and look at myself, I’m so small sometimes when I’m fighting them so I said only thing I have to do is drop weight and go down to welterweight. Welterweight is my weight; height and everything; I’m 5 feet, six and now I’m weighing 147 pounds comfortably,” said Moncriffe.

Moncriffe has a ring record of 12 wins, 8 losses and a draw with 4 knockouts. Meanwhile, the 25 year old Wilson who has been brought in as a late replacement for compatriot Daniel Roach, will be making his professional debut.

“I fought ads a professional in mixed martial arts before so I’m used to it; I’m used to fighting infront of big crowds, used to being in enemy territory, it’s nothing new,” noted Wilson.

Jamaica lead the series 2-1 following victories by Richard "Frog" Holmes and Nico Yeyo and last week's defeat of Ramel "Sub Zero" Lewis. TVJ will have live coverage of Wednesday's fight starting at 9:30 pm.
