Confident 80-member team heads to Carifta Championship

Jamaica 80 strong-member Carifta track and field team left the island on Thursday afternoon for the Cayman Islands to defend a title they have won for several successive years. The team that left on Thursday morning was a mix of experienced juniors and first timers but included the best of Jamaica's junior programme selected following last weekend's Carifta Trials at the National Stadium.

They head to the Cayman Islands highly motivated they can better the 82 medals they garnered last year. News emerged earlier this week that a major gaffe on the part of the Caymanian officials has resulted in all rounds of the 200 metres being contested on the same day, making it doubtful that IAAF World Under-20 champion Brianna Williams would attempt the sprint double.

But Williams who has been named female captain, is still hoping to mount a challenge. For his part, male captain Kai Chang and boys champs long jump record holder Wayne Pinnock who have both been enjoying a good season, are hoping to leave a major mark in this, their final year at Carifta. The Carifta Championships will run from Saturday, April 20 to Monday, April 22.
