DaCosta fights back in trainer's championship race

Commentary by Track Announcer Brian Rickman

Reigning champion Wayne DaCosta staged a fightback on Wednesday's midweek programme at Caymanas Park to cut Anthony "Baba" Nunes' lead by over $450,000 in the race for the trainer's championship. DaCosta who started the day $1.5 million in stakes earnings behind Nunes, landed a double while Nunes managed only one win. DaCosta's winner's included the 9-2 shot Hover Craft who closed his double by landing the Open Allowance contest over 9 furlongs and 25 yards with apprentice Christopher Mamdeen aboard.

DaCosta had earlier saddled the 2-1 chance Rojorn Di Pilot with champion jockey Omar Walker to victory in the opening event over 5 furlongs straight. Nunes' lone win came courtesy of Musketoon in the day's penultimate event over 6-and-a-half furlongs. He now leads DaCosta by $1.1 million with four racedays to go.

Meanwhile, Nuclear Lava with 3-time former champion jockey Dane Nelson for trainer Everal Francis, scored a come-from-behind victory in the Joseph Armond Memorial Trophy, a Restricted Allowance 2 contest over the circular nine course.
It's as you were in the jockey's championship as both Anthony Thomas and Dick Cardenas went winless with Thomas remaining 10 wins clear at the top of the table. Racing continues on Saturday.
