Edwin Allen High duo win gold at Penn Relays

The Edwin Allen High duo of Claudette Allen and Rochelle Fraser both over-turned disappointments from last year to land field event titles on Thursday at the 120th Penn Relays at The University of Pennsylvania, USA.

Allen who placed second in the Long Jump last year leapt 6.21 meters to snatch the gold medal. Her victory never seemed in doubt as she took an early lead with 5.91 meters.

She followed it up with the winning jump to help remove the disappointment of finishing second in the Girl’s under-20 final at the Carifta Championships last weekend. She said she was pleased with her effort. “I am much stonger than last year so although conditions were tough, I was still able to come out on top.”

Her coach Kedine Geddes who herself won three Penn Relay Long Jump titles, said that the trip from the Carifta Championships in Martinique would also have affected the Girl’s Champs class one winner. “We still have some technical issues to work on like landing and flight on take off, but overall I am pleased.”

Allen who is the second leg runner on Edwin Allen’s sprint relay team has a long jump best of 6.45 metres which currently ranks her number one in the world as a junior.

Meanwhile,  Fraser who captured the Carifta Discus throw title on the weekend followed up with Penn Relays gold.

Competing approximately ten minutes walk away from the main athletics arena, Fraser threw 47.20 metres to turn the table on Hydel’s Shadae Lawrence 47.45 who had beaten her at Boys' and Girls' Championships.

Fraser and Allen were among five second place finishes for Edwin Allen at the Penn Relays last year.
