Girls' sprint records highlight Day 1 of Central Champs

Record breaking runs highlighted Tuesday's opening day of the Digicel Central Athletics Championships at GC Foster College. Brandy Hall of Edwin Allen sprinted to a record time of 11.46 seconds in the Class Two 100 metres, erasing the old time of 11.58 set by Saskieka Steele of Holmwood Technical last year. The former record holder Steele came storming down the track in heat 2 but could only manage 11.50 seconds, while Edwin Allen's Tia Clayton in heat 3 was much more relaxed, crossing the line in 11.55.

The fast times continued among the Class 1 girls, as Kayla Bonnick of St Jago sped to 11.64 seconds, lowering the previous mark of 11.72. Young sprint sensation Kevona Davis completed the 200 metres Class One girls heat, comfortably in 23.59 seconds. Her teammate Tina Clayton 23.92 seconds, won her heat of the class 2 girls event.

After 11 completed finals in the girls' section, St Jago High are in the lead on 103 points while Edwin Allen are second on 99.5, Hydel third on 71, Holmwood Technical fourth on 47 and Vere Techncial 34.5 closing out the top five.

Bovel McPherson of Holmwood Technical impressed in the Class One boys 400 metres heats, running 48.24 seconds. Meanwhile, in the boys category, St Jago are also in the lead on 112 points, with Edwin Allen in second on 48, Bridgeport third on 34, Knox College fourth on 23 and Jonathan Grant fifth on 22. Wednesday's final day of the championships will get underway with the 3000m final for girls starting at 9:00 am .
