Government shelves plans for Jamaica to host 2019 World Relays

Report by RJRGLEANER Communications Group Sports Reporter Kayon Raynor

The Government has ditched plans to hastily bid to host for the 2019 IAAF World Relays and will instead opt to bid for the next two editions starting 2021. According to Minister of Sports Olivia Grange, there is not enough time or money for Jamaica to do everything necessary to host the event following the late withdrawal of the Bahamas.

The Minister said the Government stopped pursuing the 2019 edition in the last two weeks after meeting with IAAF president Seb Coe. Minister Grange added that Jamaica will go back to its original plan to host the event in 2021 and 2023.

Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA) president Dr Warren Blake expressed disappointment in an article in Tuesday’s Gleaner that the Government could not provide a financial guarantee of US $6 million for next year’s World Relays.
