Jamaica recorded an exciting 3-2 win over Martinique in their opening fixture of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Under- 14 Girls Challenge Series at the Captain Horace Burrell Centre of Excellence, UWI Mona on Monday..
Natoya Atkinson scored all three goals for the young Reggae Girlz with her first coming in the 35th minute. But three minutes later Martinique were back on level terms after Petit Lauryane headed past the goalkeeper in time added on.
Atkinson's 45th minute strike was then cancelled out by a penalty kick by captain Thomas Kanelle before the Jamaica number 9 returned for her third of the game in the 70th minute to hand the host nation 3 points. Despite the win, head coach Dexter Gilmore said his team did not play up to his expectations.
In the opening game, the Dominican Republic brushed aside Bermuda 5-0. The tournament continues on Wednesday with Bermuda taking on Martinique at 2:00 pm and Jamaica facing the Dominican Republic in the feature at 4:00. The Challenge Series ends on Friday with another double header at the same venue.
