Jamaican 400m trio miss out on medals at London World Champs

Despite having three representatives in the final of the women’s 400m, Jamaica failed to add to its medal tally of two on Wednesday’s 6th day of competition at the 16th IAAF World Athletics Championships in London.

2015 bronze medallist Shericka Jackson 50.76 seconds, could only manage 5th while Stephenie McPherson did 50.86 for 6th and veteran female team captain Novlene Williams-Mills posted 51.48 seconds for 8th.

Phyllis Francis of the United States created a major upset take the gold medal in 49.92 seconds over Salwa Eid Naser of Bahrain 50.06 and Allyson Felix of the USA in 50.08 seconds.

Daniel Thomas-Dodd who created history by becoming the first Jamaican woman to qualify for a shot put final at the World Championships, had a best effort of 18.91 metres which placed her 4th. Infact, Thomas-Dodd found herself in third position twice during the final before she was overtaken.

 Elsewhere, Kemar Mowatt did 48.99 seconds for 4th place in the men’s 400m final. Aisha Praught advanced to the final of the women’s 3000m steeplechase after clocking 9 minutes, 26.37 seconds for 4th place in her heat.

Rasheed Dwyer and Yohan Blake both failed to make it to the men’s 200m final with Dwyer doing 20.69 for 9th in his semi-final and Blake 20.52 for third in his section.

Elsewhere, Kemoye Campbell clocked 13 minutes, 26.67 seconds to finish 9th in his heat and qualified for the men’s 5000 metres final.

Thursday’s 7th day of competition will see Ristanana Tracey representing Jamaica in the final of the women’s 400m hurdles at 3:35 pm Jamaica time.
