West Indies coach Stuart Law says he is open to showing "leniency" towards selecting Chris Gayle as long as the veteran opener can fulfil certain "guidelines". Gayle returned to the ODI set-up for the first time since the 2015 World Cup, during the limited-overs leg of the England tour last month, and his play has convinced law that he deserves preferential treatment. The 38 year old also made a T20 comeback earlier this year.
Law says the T20 international at Chester-le-Street and the fourth ODI at the Oval, assured him of Gayle's commitment.
He believes that players like Gayle and Marlon Samuels, who struggled for form in the recent ODI series could still play a critical role in the team by mentoring the younger players.
